How the Numbers Work

When you reveal a square, it shows a number from 1 to 8. That number tells you exactly how many mines are in the eight squares around it. A square showing 1 has exactly one mine among its neighbours. A square showing 2 has exactly two. The numbers are not random decorations — they are a system of equations, and solving the equations is the game. If you treat each number as a precise statement about its neighbours, the board stops being a lottery and becomes a puzzle.

The Single Neighbour Rule

The easiest deduction in Minesweeper: when a number touches exactly one unknown square, that square must be a mine. A 1 with a single hidden neighbour means that neighbour is definitely a mine — flag it. A 2 with two hidden neighbours means both are mines. This rule alone solves a surprising portion of most boards, especially in the early game when numbers are surrounded by revealed territory.

The 1-2-1 Pattern

The most famous pattern in Minesweeper is 1-2-1. Imagine a row with three revealed numbers — 1, 2, 1 — sitting above a row of three unknown squares. The two squares under the 2 are mines, and the squares under the two 1s are safe. Why? The two 1s each need one mine, the 2 needs two, and the only way the 2 can have two mines while both 1s have one is for the middle two squares to be mines. Spotting 1-2-1 clears entire sections of the board in seconds.

The 1-2-2-1 Pattern

The cousin pattern is 1-2-2-1: four numbers in a row above four unknown squares. Here the middle two squares are mines and the outer two are safe. The logic is the same shape — the two 2s in the middle must account for two mines each, and the outer 1s must each account for one, which forces the mines into the middle. Once you know these two patterns, a large share of medium boards becomes a scanning exercise rather than a reasoning marathon.

Chord When the Flags Are In

Minesweeper’s hidden superpower is the chord move: when a revealed number has all its surrounding mines flagged, you can click that number to reveal every remaining neighbour in one action. Chording is not a shortcut — it is the reward for correct flagging, and it is how fast players clear large areas safely. Use it whenever a number’s mine count is satisfied. If you have flagged a 2’s two mines, chording it reveals the other six neighbours automatically.

Treat the Edge as an Ally

A square on the edge of the board has fewer neighbours, which makes its clues easier to read. A corner square touches only three squares. When the middle of the board feels stuck, solve the border first — edge clues are the most constrained, and the territory they unlock usually opens up the interior. This is the same instinct that makes Sudoku solvers attack the densest row first.

Why “No Guessing” Changes Everything
