Nonograms look like crossword puzzles for numbers: every row and column carries a list of clues, and your job is to fill in exactly the right cells so that each line matches its clues. Finish the grid and a picture appears. The rules are simple, but solving a nonogram well is a skill — and the good news is that the skill is almost entirely technique. Read the Clues the Right Way
Each number in a clue describes a block of filled cells, and the numbers appear in order. A row clue of “3 1” means a block of three filled cells, then at least one empty cell, then a block of one filled cell — always in that order, read left to right. A clue of “4” means one solid block of four. The same rules apply to columns, read top to bottom. Understanding that the blocks must appear in order, with at least one empty cell between them, is the foundation of every technique that follows.
The Overlap Rule: Your Best Friend
The single most powerful technique is the overlap rule. For any block, figure out the earliest and latest positions it could occupy, and fill in the cells that are covered by both. Imagine a row of ten cells with the clue “7”. The block could start at cell 1, cell 2, cell 3 or cell 4 — but no later, because a block of seven needs four cells of space. Every possible position covers cells 4, 5, 6 and 7, so those four cells are guaranteed filled. Fill them immediately. The overlap rule works for any block longer than half the line, and it is how every nonogram solver starts.
Mark the Empties as You Go
Knowing where cells are not filled is just as important as knowing where they are. When a block cannot possibly reach a cell, mark that cell as empty. For example, in a row of ten with the clue “3”, the block can never occupy the ninth or tenth cell, so those two are empty. Marking empties early keeps your mental picture honest and often reveals cells that are forced. Most nonogram interfaces have a tool for marking empties — use it. Work from the Edges Inward
Cells near the edges of a row are easier to pin down than cells in the middle, because a block pressed against the edge has fewer possible positions. Solve the outermost rows and columns first, then use the constraints they create to work inward. This is the same instinct that makes Sudoku solvers attack the most filled row first: the more constrained a line is, the more it tells you.
Re-Scan After Every Breakthrough
The biggest time-waster in nonograms is solving a row, then moving on as if nothing changed. Every row you solve constrains the columns that cross it, and every column you solve constrains the rows. After any big deduction, scan the lines it touches again — lines that were impossible a minute ago are often solvable now. The puzzle is a web of constraints, and each solved line tightens the whole web.
Use Candidate Testing Only When Needed
Rarely, on the hardest puzzles, you may need to test a hypothesis: pick a line with only two or three possible arrangements, fill one arrangement in your head, and check whether it makes a contradiction elsewhere. If it does, that arrangement is impossible and you can rule it out. This is not guessing — it is a logical proof by contradiction. But save it for the end of a hard puzzle. On easy and medium grids, the overlap rule and edge solving are enough.
Why the Picture Is the Reward
The reason nonograms are so satisfying is that the picture is never a shortcut. You cannot see it while you work, only the numbers, and the numbers fully determine the answer. When the final row clicks into place and the image appears, you are seeing the result of a chain of certain steps, not a lucky guess.
